The Sunday Times recently published a list of “The 10 things you need to know about tax investigations” which makes very interesting reading to those of you who have ever faced an investigation by HM Revenue & Customs, and even more interesting reading to those who have yet to have the pleasure!

Despite the assurances that “Tax doesn’t have to be taxing” (a comment that Adam Hart-Davis later retracted in January this year, unfortunately investigations and even smaller “aspect” enquiries are often more in depth than first appears.

If you ever have the pleasure of an inspector sending you a letter with regards to an enquiry into your business or personal affairs, it is always best to consult the advice of an accountant before letting the matter get out of hand.

Remember - prevention is better than any cure, so by keeping accurate records you will likely be able to avoid any unwanted attention from HM Revenue & Customs.

Have you considered providing childcare vouchers to your employees?  The cost of the vouchers can be taken as salary sacrifice or on top of the current wages paid and you will save employers national insurance on the value of the vouchers.

There are of course regulations that must be adhered to. For example, the scheme must be available to all employees and set up with a registered provider. Also, to avoid any benefits in kind, the vouchers must also be valued at £55 or less per employee per week.

There are also a few pitfalls that should be avoided and so to make sure that it is beneficial to all, all issues must be considered carefully before implementing this system, but it can be a tax efficient way of retaining your employees whilst saving National Insurance for both you and your employees
