HM Revenue and Customs have recently launched their latest campaign which aims to identify people with undeclared rental or holiday let income.  

Apparently, they are getting their information by searching the land registry to identify those with second properties but no property income. If they pick you, you will be sent a standard letter advising that they believe you have undeclared income and requesting a full response within 30 days covering all tax years since 2002. 

The request for information is not notice of a formal enquiry into your affairs and it does advise that provision of information is on a voluntary basis only. 

Failure to respond may therefore give them cause to take action and open an enquiry, which may also lead to increased penalty charges on any tax due as a result.
