HM Revenue and Customs have at long last clarified the rules on whether large pension contributions made by limited companies qualify for tax relief or not; previously you could only find out after the contribution had been made which was a ridiculous situation.

This is great news for controlling directors of limited companies with high profits who want to avoid a big tax bill or for those thinking of getting a lot of money into a pension to buy a commercial property.

However, to realise any potential tax savings, the contribution must be paid before your company year-end and clients are advised to discuss their tax planning strategies with their Principal Adviser or Client Manager at least two months before that year-end.
